Covered and exposed by successions of inland seas over eons of time, one can find sharks teeth, sandy ledges of fossilized shells, or as I once found while painting at this location a large cast of the interior of an ammonite shell. Cerro Quatro is the remains of a volcanic core that erupted during a period when a sea covered this area. There are around fifty volcanic cores of various sizes and shapes throughout the valley. Some of the most spectacular weather events that I have ever seen have occurred here. Storm systems generated from the Jemez Mts to the north, the Sandia Mts to the east and Mt Taylor to the south will sometimes collide violently in this wide open space releasing tons of water that helps account for the extreme erosion found in the area.
