Sails of the World by Mark Whitcombe Large Signed Print, Vintage Nautical Art
“Sails Of The World” by Mark Whitcombe. Calling all fine art fans with a nautical bent, this is a large and rare pencil signed Mark Whitcombe print from 1989. Mark’s very essence was captured on canvas and etching plate, and while his portfolio was wide he’s seen as one of America’s leading nautical artistes. His work has been exhibited for years at The Opening Gallery in Soho, The Smith Gallery, Ideas and Images Gallery, Starving Artist Gallery, Hole in the Wall Gallery. And Focal Point Gallery. His cubist painting “The Musicians” is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Whitcombe was also a regular contributor to The Island Current for many years, from his first cover in December 1974 to his last in November 1993. He won many awards and his work has appeared in many publications, including Nautical Quarterly, Wooden Boat Magazine, Sailing Life and Playboy Magazine. This particular print features over 75 historical boat sails from around the world. It was printed by Red Jacket Galleries in Charleston, S. This print was then eventually framed by Ashley’s Art & Frame… Los Angeles (see pic). The print measures a LARGE 32 1/2 wide x 28 5/8″ height x 7/8″ depth. It weighs approximately 8lbs. Great as a gift or for the collector of wall art, vintage prints, nautical art, painting, pictures and other novel items. This print is in great condition, yet shows signs of age and wear as all great vintage items do. Examine all the pictures closely. The frame has wear and scuff marks on it. His printed signature appears to have a slight scratch line in the plexiglass over it, and then his actual real life pencil signature sits below. I’m not sure if this “line” is intentional or not (see pic). Zoom in & out to get a good sense of this painting’s exact condition: a picture tells a thousand words. World War I Red Cross Original Vintage Poster
Red Cross Original Vintage Poster. Approximately 100 years old. Good condition for a print of its age. Cloth Backing with Grommets. Image size: 40 X 30. Though an American citizen born of American parents in London in 1863, Albert Edward Sterner studied drawing as a teenager at the Birmingham Art Institute in England. The dates are clouded, but he lived in Germany in Gaggenau and Freiburg from sometime in the late 1870s until he went to Chicago between 1879 and 1882. He worked with Walter Wilcox Burridge there, painting theater scenery, in addition to illustrating newspaper articles, and employment in the lithography business. Though Sterner moved to New York City in 1885, for the next twenty years he was mainly in Europe. In Paris in 1886, he studied at the Academie Julien with Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. He received numerous commissions for magazine illustrations. A Red Cross nurse appealing to a young woman for help, as another nurse tends to a wounded man. From the Red Cross: The Red Cross nurse was considered a heroine, in fact and fiction. During World War I, the Red Cross enrolled 29,000 professional nurses, and 20,000 of these served with the military. In France alone, Red Cross personnel staffed twenty-four base hospitals that were operated jointly with the army. These hospitals treated nearly 92,000 wounded soldiers. The working conditions were often primitive, and the hours long and exhausting. The stamina and dedication of the Red Cross nurses became legendary, and inspired popular songs such as The Rose of No Man’s Land and novels like Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms.
