Vintage Original Limited Edition Grapes Plate LXIII G. Brookshaw Estimate $1200

Professionally matter and framed. Due to the old age of the piece the frame has som minor chips and scratches, the glass is in perfect condition, the print has been in storage for a very long time and has never been exposed to the sun. There is no fading. Description: This remarkable, large folio fruit engraving is from George Brookshaw’s Pomona Britannica, or a Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits at present cultivated in the country; together with the Blossoms and Leaves of such as are necessary to distinguish the various sorts from each other. The work featured originally hand-colored aquatint engravings created using the color printed stipple method. They were engraved by R. George Brookshaw published the work in 1806 in London. Dunthorne remarked on Brookshaw and his work as One of the eminent English artists of the early nineteenth century is George Brookshaw, who issued in 1812, Pomona Britannica. Ninety aquatint plates, printed in colour and on a scale comparable to Thornton’s Temple of Flora, depict the fruit grown around London and particularly in the royal gardens at Hampton Court. In Aquatint Engravings, Brookshaw’s Pomona Britannica is described by S. Prideaux as’one of the finest colour plate books in existence. In many of these plates the lovely mellow tones of the fruit glow against the dark or light brown backgrounds. Actual print 17 3/4″ by 22 1/2″. Total with frame 30 3/4″ x 34 3/4″. Artist or Maker: George Brookshaw. Medium: Large Folio, Originally Hand-colored Aquatint Engraving. Condition Report: Overall Good. There is some mat burn or fading from being framed previously. World War I Red Cross Original Vintage Poster

Red Cross Original Vintage Poster. Approximately 100 years old. Good condition for a print of its age. Cloth Backing with Grommets. Image size: 40 X 30. Though an American citizen born of American parents in London in 1863, Albert Edward Sterner studied drawing as a teenager at the Birmingham Art Institute in England. The dates are clouded, but he lived in Germany in Gaggenau and Freiburg from sometime in the late 1870s until he went to Chicago between 1879 and 1882. He worked with Walter Wilcox Burridge there, painting theater scenery, in addition to illustrating newspaper articles, and employment in the lithography business. Though Sterner moved to New York City in 1885, for the next twenty years he was mainly in Europe. In Paris in 1886, he studied at the Academie Julien with Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. He received numerous commissions for magazine illustrations. A Red Cross nurse appealing to a young woman for help, as another nurse tends to a wounded man. From the Red Cross: The Red Cross nurse was considered a heroine, in fact and fiction. During World War I, the Red Cross enrolled 29,000 professional nurses, and 20,000 of these served with the military. In France alone, Red Cross personnel staffed twenty-four base hospitals that were operated jointly with the army. These hospitals treated nearly 92,000 wounded soldiers. The working conditions were often primitive, and the hours long and exhausting. The stamina and dedication of the Red Cross nurses became legendary, and inspired popular songs such as The Rose of No Man’s Land and novels like Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. Or also known as Chromo-lithography produced very rich coloration, which accounts for a considerable part of the appeal of these posters when we see them today. Scarce Original Zincography Print by G. Hicks “PENNY A BUNCH” ca 1889’s. Up for sale a very old print with a gorgeous soft colors. Print was made in England. The original painting was done in 1899 by the British artist George Elgar Hicks. It is signed by GE Hicks 99. Hicks met this child on a casual trip and was enchanted with her. And asked to paint her. The owner of the face was in tears when the painter tore her sleeve in order to get the proper waifish look. Print dimensions: 16″x21,5″. Frame dimensions: 25″x31″. Print is in excellent condition. After our research we believe this is a zincography print. Zincography was a planographic printing process that used zinc plates coated in acid. The result is much more controlled than those produced with wooden blocks and the line work can be much more expressive. This method of printing was adopted in 1850’s. This piece looks even better in person. Gorgeous colors make print even more attractive.
